Barrett Kays & Associates, P.A., as a part of a multidisciplinary team, was chosen for the North Carolina Chapter of American Society of Landscape Architects' 1998 Honor Award (the highest award) for the University of North Carolina's NC Arboretum Project. When fully developed, the North Carolina Arboretum will span more than 400 acres of the Pisgah National Forest in Western North Carolina approximately 20 miles southwest of Asheville at the junction of the Blue Ridge Parkway and French Broad River. This project fulfills Frederick Law Olmstead's 1895 original vision of the Biltmore Estate. The stewardship of the Arboretum is a contemporary expression of the Southern Appalachian landscape to its projected million visitors per year. BKA's work includes the design of a new 1.5 mile entrance road from the Blue Ridge Parkway and NC 191. The new entrance roadway was specially designed to nestle and follow along Bent Creek trait waters, causeway, and gentle meander up to the top of the mountain to the entrance plaza of the NC Arboretum Education Building Gardens. The Arboretum anticipates over 2 million visitors per year.
