The June 1996 issue of North Carolina Magazine features an Executive Profile Article of Barrett Kays. It spotlights his work on the successful restoration of New York City Central Park's Great Lawn and Belvedere Lake. The restoration was complex technically and politically. It involved installing a drainage system for an old reservoir that sat underneath the Great Lawn, as well as proscribing a unique combination of soil and vegetation that is able to withstand the trampling of 17 million visitors each year. The restoration was a delicate political issue because it required public support and New Yorkers have strong feelings about the park. Also, its completion had a strict deadline to be completed before Mayor Giuliani's re-election. In addition to the Great Lawn project, the article also profiles Kays' career as a soil scientist and consultant, and describes his work on the North Carolina Citizens for Business & Industry's (NCCBI) Endangered Species and Wetlands Subcommittees of the Environmental Concerns Committee.
